Remember when we used to daydream about the future and all the technological marvels it would hold - robots, hover boards, and autonomous vehicles? The future is now! We've already seen robots revolutionize manufacturing and hover boards become the latest tech craze. Now it seems autonomous cars just around the corner as General Motors recently announced that it will be the first car company to mass-produce vehicles equipped with self-driving technology in January 2017. According to an Automotive News article published on December 15, 2016, self-driving Chevrolet Bolts will come rolling out of a GM plant in Michigan at the beginning of the new year.

2016 Equinox gets a facelift

Today, Chevrolet debuted the refreshed 2016 Equinox at the Chicago Auto Show. Updates to the popular SUV include new styling with premium accents, new wheel designs and new available safety features, as well as a larger color touchscreen radio and a standard rear-vision camera for entry-level models.

The enhanced Equinox will hit showrooms this fall, building on five years of record sales in the highly competitive compact SUV segment and strengthening Chevrolet’s broad sport utility lineup, which includes the Traverse, the all-new Trax small SUV and the redesigned 2015 Tahoe and Suburban full-size SUVs.

The roster of new and updated features available on the 2016 Equinox includes:

• New trim lineup: L, LS, LT and LTZ, a streamlining of the model lineup that eliminates the 1LT and 2LT trims.
• New front fascia and chrome-accented dual-port grille design – including specific chrome trim on LT and LTZ grilles
• New, premium projector-beam headlamps on all models helps make the Equinox more visible at night
• New daytime running lamps on LT and LTZ, with reflector-style lamps on L and LS, and light-emitting diode, (LED) lamps on LT and LTZ that create a distinctive, upscale lighting signature
• New fog lamps on LTZ
• New, Chevy-signature dual-element taillamps, revised license plate applique and revised lower rear fascia on all models, with chrome trim on LTZ lower fascia
• New 17-inch aluminum wheels on LT and new 18-inch aluminum wheels on LTZ
• New available 17-inch wheel optional on LS model
• New chrome exhaust outlets on V-6 models
• Available Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert safety features on LT and LTZ
• Standard seven-inch-diagonal Color Touch radio (including Bluetooth phone connectivity) and rear-vision camera on L and LS models
• Revised instrument panel “center stack” with new storage shelf and updated control graphics
• New, chrome-trimmed transmission shifter with Electronic Range Selector mode buttons relocated to the top of the shifter handle
• Enhanced interior fabrics in L and LS designed for a premium look and feel
• New Saddle Up interior color
• New universal tablet holders available through dealers from Chevrolet Accessories. They mount on the rear of the front seats to provide convenient access for rear-seat passengers.

A compact SUV with big features

The 2016 Equinox seats five, with all-wheel drive offered on LS, LT and LTZ models. Its roomy interior – with the GM-exclusive MultiFlex sliding rear seat – offers 31.4 cubic feet (889 liters) of cargo space behind the rear seat and 63.7 cubic feet (1,803 liters) with the rear seat folded.

The standard Ecotec 2.4L direct-injected engine delivers an EPA-estimated 32 mpg on the highway (FWD models). A direct-injected 3.6L V-6 is available with LT and LTZ models and delivers best-in-class 301 horsepower (225 kW) and 272 lb-ft of torque (369 Nm). The V-6 engine also enables a trailering capacity of up to 3,500 pounds (1,588 kg) – capability unmatched by four-cylinder-only competitors.

Chevrolet MyLink is standard on LT and LTZ models, while OnStar with 4G LTE connectivity and built-in Wi-Fi hotpot is offered on all trim levels. Equinox was the first in the segment to offer 4G LTE and it provides a mobile hub for drivers and passengers to stay connected. The hotspot is on whenever the car is on and comes with a three-month/3GB data trial (whichever comes first).

In addition to available Side Blind Zone Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert safety features, Equinox also offers Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning as part of comprehensive safety packages.

2016 Nissan Titan XD revealed at the North American International Auto Show

2015 Corvette Z06 rated at 650 horsepower

It's official: when the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 arrives at Everett dealerships later this year, it'll deliver a staggering 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful production car in Chevy history.

The 2015 Corvette Z06's supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 small-block V-8 is officially SAE certified at 650 horsepower at 6,400 rpm, and 650 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm. With its impressive numbers, the 2015 Z06 outguns many exotic sports cars from around the world, including the Porsche 911 Turbo S and the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta.

Another first for the Z06 is that customers will able able to pair the LT4 with either a standard 7-speed manual transmission or an all-new, paddle-shift 8-speed automatic.

When to replace worn tires

Tires are an important investment on your vehicle. Although they provide years of service, all tires eventually wear out and need to be replaced. The real question is: when?

National studies by tire manufacturers and distributors have proven that tire safety and performance depends on tread depth. So just how much tire tread do you need?

Vehicles were tested with tire sets of three varying tread depths: new tires with 10/32" tread, worn tires with 4/32" tread and near legally worn out tires with only 2/32" tread. Remember, the minimum standard to pass a North Carolina State Inspection is 2/32".

A new tire features deep grooves that channel water through the footprint to provide wet traction. As the tire wears, the reduced tread depth restricts the amount of water that can pass, resulting in lost traction. The studies have proven that as tread depth decreases, stopping time and distance increases.

1997 Chevy Step Side hits 500,000 mile mark and keeps running strong

GM - the new King of Quality

General Motors is the new "King of Quality" based on the Initial Quality Study recently released by J.D. Power and Associates. This marks the first time that GM has claimed the top spot in quality among its competing automotive manufacturers.

The annual study measures the number of problems reported during the first 90 days of ownership of a new 2013 vehicle. GM's four brands averaged 98 problems per 100 vehicles, making it the only automaker with less than one problem per new car.

Furthermore, GM placed two brands - Chevrolet and GMC - in the top five of the study. GMC ranked #2 while Chevrolet ranked #5. Cadillac tied for 13th and Buick tied for 15th. All GM brands finished above industry average.

GMC pickups 101: Bustin myths of truck aerodynamics

The all-new 2014 Sierra full-size pickup truck spent more development time in a wind tunnel than any GMC pickup before it, resulting in design changes that benefit Hickory area drivers in both fuel efficiency and interior quietness.

To achieve improved airflow, aerodynamic engineers examined every millimeter of the truck to find areas of improvement, debunking some popular myths along the way.

To study the way air passes over, under and around the Sierra, engineers used General Motors’ state-of-the-art Aerodynamics Lab, a 750-foot-long tunnel through which a 43-foot-diameter fan powered by a DC electric motor with the equivalent of 4,500 horsepower can generate winds of up to 138 mph.
The engineers at GMC are always looking for ways to improve the vehicles our customers love. Their aerodynamic advancements are just one reason why the 2014 Sierra will be the most fuel-efficient V-8 pickup in the Everett Chevrolet Buick GMC showroom.

A new air dam below the 2014 Sierra’s front bumper successfully reduces drag because it directs air toward the ground and away from the truck’s rough underbody. And Sierra’s ducted flow path between the grille and radiator prevents air from swirling inside the truck’s front cavities.

Even the top of the Sierra’s tailgate and the center high-mounted stop light are optimized to guide air cleanly around the truck. And because engineers detected unwanted airflow between the cab and bed, new sealing has been added.

The pickup market has a great number of available aftermarket accessories, and GM engineers say those have varying impact on aerodynamics. Add-ons like bug deflectors on the hood, wider tires or aftermarket bumpers can raise the drag coefficient, which is the measure of how air pushes on a vehicle as it moves down the road. The result: added noise and increased fuel consumption.

A long-disputed topic among truck owners is whether a tailgate raised or lowered is better for aerodynamics, but engineers say a tailgate in the up position is more aerodynamically efficient. As air flows over the truck, it falls over the cab and pushes forward on the rear of the truck. With the tailgate down, the benefits of that airflow are diminished.

So what accessories can Hickory, NC area truck owners add to help aerodynamics? Tonneau covers for the bed help smooth airflow over the truck, and engineers say soft covers are more beneficial than hard covers because they form to how the air wants to flow. Running boards can also help air flow smoothly down the truck’s sides.
